Remodel,
log home in Deerfield Massachusetts
These clients came to
us through their kitchen-design professional. They said simply that
they had seen a friend ruin a great new kitchen with what they termed
"awful" lighting. Their requirements were complicated by the fact
that log homes do not have space for wiring or built-in lighting
between floors and by the demanding aesthetics of log interiors
(they're dark, and conventional things like ceiling cans look incongruous
in rustic wood ceilings). We designed for and supplied the best
quality, most efficient, dimmable, undercabinet and aimable
ceiling lighting available. To minimize visibility on the wood ceiling,
we supplied custom-colored, fully regressed ceiling downlights.
And we reduced their surface brightness by locating them for aiming
away from sight lines.

We also aimed light sources
at intersecting angles to provide shadow-free lighting regardless
of location. (Note: aiming is particularly crucial in kitchens such
as this one, because granite countertops are highly
reflective and can produce overwhelming
glare.) Finally, we fabricated custom, solid-brass antique-looking
gooseneck fixtures, in a custom finish, to provide aimable peninsula
illumination (This is an area where ceiling cans would be conspicuous
regardless of aiming.)
The results? "Perfect! Beyond perfect, even"
